CourierPost wins Supply Chain Innovation Award

On 13th October, CourierPost received the supreme award for Supply Chain Innovation in New Zealand. This was presented by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport at a special awards evening in Wellington.

The Award recognises notable innovation in systems and technology in the New Zealand Supply Chain sector during the period 1st July 2009 to 30th June 2010 with CourierPost topping the field as a result of the creation and implementation of the Auckland Operations Centre (AOC).

The judging panel assessed an array of entries and selected CourierPost as according to their criteria we “demonstrated a substantial level of innovation and change that has enhanced significantly the operations and success of our organization’s involvement in the sector”.

CourierPost is extremely proud to be recognised as being the pinnacle for supply chain innovation amongst our competitors. The AOC was the result of some significant planning, resource and investment, being 2.5 years in development and at $50m is the single largest investment our industry has ever seen.

At the time the project commenced no one could have foreseen the global economic situation that was to come, however regardless, our bold step in backing our decision to create New Zealand’s first fully integrated automated parcel sortation facility has paid off in knowing that we have taken a longer term view by investing in both our own and our customer’s future.

This ambitious project with very aggressive timelines saw the combination of three of our significant Auckland operations under one roof and was achieved without any impact to customers or our own process; a real testament to the planning and our people involved.

The benefits we have achieved to date have been huge and these include:

    • A 600% increase in freight processing capacity (3000 items p/h to 18,000)
    • Zero Lost Time for Injury (LTI) since operation
    • 700% increasing in scanning / imaging of our freight
    • Significant reduction in manual handling (improves miss-sorts and damages)
    • 4 star Green Building rating - 1st in Australasia (also saving $94,000 in waste costs)

We wish to also recognise all those involved with the project from BCS & FKI Logistix who implemented the sortation technology as well as the property developers Goodman. But most importantly we want to acknowledge all of our people who made all this happen. Without your assistance, skill and support the AOC would not have been the success that it is today.

With what we now have available at the AOC we’re continuing to make significant achievements, and as NZ’s number one courier company, we look forward to continuing to lead and invest in the future of our industry
